Up Close and Personal with Author Genavieve Blackwood

Updated: Oct 14, 2021

Welcome to my blog! A new and exciting segment dedicated to introducing you to new and established authors and their books.

Today, I would like to welcome author Genavieve Blackwood.

Let’s get started.

1) What is your name and where are you from?

Hi all! My name is Genavieve Blackwood and I'm from New Jersey, born and raised. 2) Are you employed outside of writing? Yes, I work full time and I also run a small Etsy shop, Elegant Realm. 3) What was your childhood dream? Do I just pick one? I have wanted to be a costume or fashion designer since I was a kid. At one point, I also wanted to own an ice cream shop (and I still might do it one day). 4) In your own words, what is love? I guess it would be caring so much about someone that they're never far from your mind and you get happy to see them, and it hurts when you hurt them or are apart from them. 5) When did you publish your first book? What was that like? I published my first book, Wanderer Among Shadows, in January of 2021. It's based on the true story of the Parker family of Andover who were involved with the

Salem Witch Trials.

Publishing was exciting as I finally got to put my work out into the world. But it was also a bit nerve-wracking as I self-published and had to figure out everything on my own. I even drew my own cover art!

6) What takes up too much of your time? The various craft projects I work on. I'm either sewing something or making something for the holidays. 7) What are you currently working on? I am currently working on my next story, tentatively called Shipwrecked. It's set during the 1890s on the coast of Maine and is about a lighthouse keeper and his family. It's part crime thriller, part horror story. 8) What’s the most difficult thing about being a writer? The most exciting thing? I think for me the most difficult thing is trying to get people interested in your work. As someone who is not a natural marketer, it can be a bit difficult to get readers outside of your friends and family. The most exciting thing about writing is getting to explore different worlds and time places and getting to live vicariously through your characters. There are things you could never do in real life, but the possibilities are limitless when you write. Then there is the research, as I work in the realm of historical fiction, which is simultaneously difficult and fun. It's fun to find out all of this history, but it can sometimes be frustrating when the information you need isn't available. 9) Why is writing important to you? Writing allows me to put my creativity into a tangible form. It provides me an outlet to express myself in ways that are often hard to say aloud. Writing is also important because it allows me to help other people. One of my goals with my writing is to help people suffering from mental illness, as I have suffered with it in the past. 10) What genre do you write in? Why? I write in historical fiction because I have always loved history and I also write in horror/supernatural fiction because I have always been fascinated by the macabre.

Genavieve, it was a pleasure. Thank you!
